These early Showa-era lacquerware lidded nimono or side-dish bowls were reserved for serving guests on special occasions and kept within a family for two generations. Each one’s lacquer is a deep iron-red, with lids hand-painted with gilt peonies — a symbol of good fortune, wealth, prosperity.
The footed lids are designed to keep contents warm but can be flipped over to also double as an extra side dish.
