Solmu Puut’s Lacquer Plate A enhances the rich elegance of Yamazakura (Wild Cherry wood) from Yakushima with an unusual, tactile lacquer technique. Shaped from chainsaw-cut rounds of fallen cherry wood, each plate is turned on the wood lathe before undergoing a meticulous urushi Japanese lacquer process.
A washi Japanese paper underlayer is applied in an irregular, expressive pattern, creating a subtle, organic topography beneath the lacquer. Multiple coats of urushi build depth and tone for understated drama that bridges Japanese traditional lacquerware with a sculptural, contemporary sensibility.
An artful display piece or a statement serving plate, it showcases Japanese craft and the natural strength of cherry wood.

Working exclusively with wood sourced from the forests of Yakushima, Solmu Puut transforms trees felled through thinning and typhoon-prevention into beautiful objects with a grounded, quiet presence. Each piece is shaped on the lathe or hand-carved, then meticulously finished by hand to reveal the natural character of Yakushima wood and the finesse of Japanese woodcraft. Their natural-finish pieces are sealed with liquid glass that is water-resistant and food-safe, yet still allows the wood to breathe, while natural oil wax brings out a soft sheen and smooth touch. Their lacquerware is built up with layers of Japanese urushi, further textured with washi paper, and their sabi-urushi pieces involve a distinctive blend of lacquer and polishing powder that creates earthy, stone-like surfaces.
The name Solmu Puut may echo a Finnish phrase meaning “knotted trees,” but the inspiration—and the beauty—are unmistakably Japanese.
