Saburo’s handcrafted conical Afumi bowls were designed as glass tableware, but are so striking, they are much more than simple dinner dishes. Inspired by the clear freshwater lakes of the artisans’ hometown of Toyama, each transparent creation is contrasted with a striking windowpane pattern of color. Ideal as a salad serving dish or a trinket bowl, and beautiful enough as an objet d’art — we recommend placing it somewhere where it can catch the sunlight to cast striking shadows across a table or window ledge.
Based in Yatsuomachi in Toyama, a prefecture famous for its glass production, Saburo focuses on tableware centerpieces inspired by Lake Biwa, a place close to its artisans Mitsuhiko and Yuki Nakata's hearts, and imbued with Japanese culture. Colors are developed after much experimentation, and all the works are kiln formed, involving a meticulous process of temperature-controlled firing, sanding, moulding and re-firing.
