SOLMU PUUT NATURAL PLATE B

Hand-turned from sustainable, thinned wood grown deep in the mountains of Yakushima, Solmu Puut’s Natural Plate B expresses the quiet radiance of Himeshara’s (Stewartia) luminous pale tone and fine, silken grain. Its beauty is captured through meticulous wood-turning and a gentle, natural finish.

Hand-shaped from log to board to lathe, its beauty is sealed with a breathable, liquid glass coating and natural oil-wax. A lightweight, contemporary Japanese craft design piece, it  balances durability with a soft, tactile presence that is ideal as everyday tableware or a striking display plate.

See our Solmu Puut collection for other unique works.

Working exclusively with wood sourced from the forests of Yakushima, Solmu Puut transforms trees felled through thinning and typhoon-prevention into beautiful objects with a grounded, quiet presence. Each piece is shaped on the lathe or hand-carved, then meticulously finished by hand to reveal the natural character of Yakushima wood and the finesse of Japanese woodcraft. Their natural-finish pieces are sealed with liquid glass that is water-resistant and food-safe, yet still allows the wood to breathe, while natural oil wax brings out a soft sheen and smooth touch. Their lacquerware is built up with layers of Japanese urushi, further textured with washi paper, and their sabi-urushi pieces involve a distinctive blend of lacquer and polishing powder that creates earthy, stone-like surfaces.

The name Solmu Puut may echo a Finnish phrase meaning “knotted trees,” but the inspiration—and the beauty—are unmistakably Japanese.
