MINO-YAKI TOKUSA NOODLE BOWL

Udon, ramen or soba — the Tokusa Mino porcelain striped bowl is just the right size for a decent portion of any kind of noodles.

Tokusa is a traditional Japanese pattern, inspired by the straight, upward-growing horsetail grass common in Japan. An old Japanese saying — “Polishing gold with Tokusa increases its luster” — makes this auspicious in design. It's one to help usher in abundance and wealth. We particularly love this bowl’s contemporary take on the pattern. The grass stalks shoot up from the sides, their subtly jagged nodes adding a rustic note to the stripes, before sweeping over the lip to create a modern zig-zag pattern around the bowl's inner rim. It’s a beautiful and striking way to frame your favorite noodle dish.

Mino-yaki, believed to be the oldest form of artistic pottery produced in Japan, dates back to the Nara Period 710-794. Produced in the old Mino Province, in present-day Gifu Prefecture, it became popular for traditional tea ceremony vessels. Today, the styles of Mino-yaki are as varied as they are beautiful — from the warm rustic glazes of hand-thrown traditional Kiso Seto, Black Seto, Shino and Oribe ware to the soft pastels of modern tableware.
