Designed by Makoto Komatsu, a renowned artisan for his subtle hint of humour in minimalist works, the Ceramic Japan Musubu vase is like an objet d'art. Each tubular piece features a loose knot that allows the work to stand in two different ways. Both ends can be used to display a single flower, and it's a stunning work, with or without a bloom.

Komatsu’s works are in museum collections worldwide, including the Victoria & Albert and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. The word “musubu” of his design for Ceramic Japan has positive connotations — “form a bond, “bear fruit,” “unite” and “tie together” — like the perfectly smooth knot of its design.

Ceramic Japan brings together contemporary designers with traditional ceramists in Seto, Aichi Prefecture, a region with a history of porcelain dating back to the 8th century. Porcelain clay is still sourced from the prefecture’s mountainous landscape and was originally fired using timber from local woodland. Artisans today use age-old techniques, now refined to perfection by modern equipment, making Ceramic Japan’s minimalist products a combination of innovative design and traditional craftsmanship.
