ANGLE ITO TSUMUGI NOODLE BOWL

The Ito Tsumugi Japanese ceramic noodle bowl brings the quiet elegance of one of Japan's most celebrated textile traditions to the dining table. Its refined pattern is inspired by tsumugi silk weaving, and rendered in classic navy and white on porcelain. It’s as thoughtful in its design as it is in its making. The bowl's surface is decorated with fine, delicate lines that evoke the rhythm of thread as if the silk itself has floated onto the porcelain.

Deep enough for a generous serving of ramen, soba or udon, it is, as its makers intended — a bowl that is warm and unpretentious as tsumugi, yet elegant enough to bring a sense of occasion to any meal.

Tsumugi is a centuries-old Japanese silk fabric, traditionally hand-woven from hand-reeled yarn in regions such as Yuki and Oshima. Valued for its understated texture, there are subtle, gentle irregularities of thread that could only have been spun by hand. It’s a fabric that speaks of patience, skill and a deep-rooted pride in the craft of making, and that same spirit is here translated into ceramic.

See the Ito Tsumugi Sushi Plate to complete the look, and take a look at our Mino-Yaki Collection to see other Japanese ceramics.

Angle work with various pottery manufacturers in Japan — from fine porcelain to earthenware — to create contemporary designs using traditional and local Japanese techniques. They focus on producing tableware to suit modern lifestyles, while retaining the familiarity of materials, provenance and history of artisanship. As their name suggests, they like to view ceramics from all angles and perspectives.
