“Afumi” is an old Japanese word for “freshwater lake,” the inspiration behind Saburo’s collection of bowls in glass as clear as the surface of a still pools. The beauty of Saburo Afumi glassware lies in the mosaic color accents that not only add a splash of vibrancy, but also cast sublime shadows when they catch the light. Hand crafted in Japan, each is subtly different and unique. The conical shape makes them ideal as fruit bowls, but when not in use, they are simply stunning artworks.

Based in Yatsuomachi in Toyama, a prefecture famous for its glass production, Saburo focuses on tableware centerpieces inspired by Lake Biwa, a place close to its artisans Mitsuhiko and Yuki Nakata's hearts, and imbued with Japanese culture. Colors are developed after much experimentation, and all the works are kiln formed, involving a meticulous process of temperature controlled firing, sanding, moulding and re-firing.
