MINO-YAKI KANNA MUG

A contemporary classic, the Kanna Mug’s colourful bands of tiny indented flecks are a modern take on a traditional Japanese decorative technique called tobikanna. Each mark is lightly hand-pressed into the porcelain base as it is gently rotated on the pottery wheel. Tobikanna is often used for Japanese folk art works, but here artisan Yoji Sone of Shofu Gama kiln adds a warm colour palette of glazes — sunny yellow with orange, rainforest greens, and sea blues. We love how the texture is paired with bright hues and the contrast of a smooth cup form with a square handle. It’s simply a joy to hold in the hands.

The Kanna Mug is made in Gifu, the heart of Japan’s Mino-Yaki pottery, one of Japan’s oldest forms of decorative ceramics. Visit our Mino-Yaki Collection to see other regional pieces.

Yoji Sone is an award-winning ceramicist of Shofu Gama Pottery in Toki, Gifu Prefecture. Shofu Gama Pottery’s motto is “Tradition is not to hand down techniques and form as it is, but to hand down the knowledge according to the times.” Yoji does this by developing contemporary-style products while preserving traditional Japanese techniques and influences.
