Produced in Mie Prefecture, Iga-yaki pottery dates back over 1,200 years and has a wonderfully tactile nature. Its rich dark gaerome clay produces tiny holes and speckles of tiny bumps — imperfections that only add to its rustic charm. Remarkably heat-resistant and sturdy, it is often used today for cookware, but Asemi brings it back to its historical role as a material for prized tea-ceremony vessels.
This Hydrangea Cup is glazed with a smooth dusky blue-purple, a textural contrast to the coarseness that peeps through from below. Each piece is handcrafted at made at the Mashino Kiln and unique in character.
Asemi Co., the brainchild of designers and friends Yuki and Lars, is founded on a mutual love for and sincere desire to help preserve Japanese traditional ceramics. There are only two cup designs — large and small — but copious pottery styles. Deliberately minimalist to draw attention to the color, texture and artisanal complexities, each cup also has an unglazed section to highlight differences in raw materials. All stackable, no matter the pottery style or cup size, they are not only a delight to behold, but a treasure to hold.
