It looks delightfully mid-century modern, but “cracked ice,” known as hyoretsu, is a design that has been used for centuries in Japan. A symbol of new beginnings and good luck, the irregular pattern here pops with fresh accents of grey, yellow and white on organic cotton. It’s the ideal re-useable wrapping for a congratulatory or housewarming gift, but also pretty enough for any other time.

Found on traditional Japanese vases, tea bowls and other tableware, the asymmetry and irregular triangles of hyoretsu are a charming example of Japan’s love of perfection in imperfection.

In 2005, the Kyoto-based Musubi opened its first store dedicated to furoshiki in Tokyo, but it has been designing and making the wrapping cloths for decades. Now working with various other furoshiki makers in Kyoto and collaborating with numerous designers and illustrators, it produces an eclectic range of vibrant patterns and styles ― from traditional to geometrically modern. Every design takes in consideration types of fabric and printing processes, and if not made by the company itself, is carefully matched with the ideal maker.
