Created by artisan Tomoki Miyazaki, Asemi’s Matsushiro-yaki cups are a delight to behold and hold. Each is unique, handcrafted and decorated with an enticing thick drip glaze that diffuses from deep brown-reds to rich blues and a wave-crest white.
Incredibly, the colours are all natural, accomplished by Tomoki using techniques that are centuries old. Iron in the clay becomes red, copper in glazes produce vibrant blues and ashes of burned straw melt into white.
At his kiln in Matsushiro, south of Nagano, Tomoki uses materials all locally sourced to create these cups that are as much a delight to just touch and feel as they are to use.
Asemi Co., the brainchild of designers and friends Yuki and Lars, is founded on a mutual love for and sincere desire to help preserve Japanese traditional ceramics. There are only two cup designs — large and small — but copious pottery styles. Deliberately minimalist to draw attention to the color, texture and artisanal complexities, each cup also has an unglazed section to highlight differences in raw materials. All stackable, no matter the pottery style or cup size, they are not only a delight to behold, but a treasure to hold.
