So many details of Arita-yaki porcelain feature in this beautiful Japanese teapot. The curves of its traditional "seigaiha" wave pattern decorate the base, accentuated by the gradient of a soft blue overglaze. Above the waves, textured lines subtly delineate its curvaceous body, while translucent flower petal details add a touch of delicacy. The petals emulate an ancient technique, called “rice grain” or “firefly” glazing, where tiny shapes were cut out of the porcelain to fill with clear glaze.
This was a gift that its previous owner thought too special to use, and for decades it sat in a cupboard. But, we think there’s something so contemporary about its form, colour and simple bamboo handle that it’s time for it become a tea-party centerpiece.
