Two traditional Japanese patterns adorn these delicate Arita-yaki white porcelain cups. Their bases feature semicircle crests of "seigaiha" waves, while, above, heart-shaped petals add soft details. Look closely and you’ll discover each petal is translucent, created as cutouts in the porcelain that filled with glaze during the firing process. Gradient blue overglaze accentuates the forms — the deep blue bases fading into white. This design is just as much about texture as it is about beauty. The patterns are indented or raised, the waves pick up the blue glaze, while lines on the rim add definition to the white porcelain.
