Completely flat, the Saburo Shari Shari plate is one of our favorite multipurpose pieces of glassware —a chic platter, a compelling dining table centerpiece, an exquisite artwork, an elegant display tray. Minute effervescent bubbles cloud the glass for a frosty appearance, a cooling aesthetic for the hot summer ahead, but it’s the gradation colour that we particularly adore. Radiating from the center, the tint gently fades to melt into clear edges — it’s a thing of beauty.
Based in Yatsuomachi in Toyama, a prefecture famous for its glass production, Saburo focuses on tableware centerpieces inspired by Lake Biwa, a place close to its artisans Mitsuhiko and Yuki Nakata's hearts, and imbued with Japanese culture. Colors are developed after much experimentation, and all the works are kiln formed, involving a meticulous process of temperature-controlled firing, sanding, moulding and re-firing.
