The Frost Kanako series by Nishiyama is all about texture. The dimpled pattern imprinted with glaze not only adds a pop of colour, but offers the comforting feel of a well-crafted object. Slightly heavier porcelain pieces, they are a delight to hold, with the pattern also serving as a little extra grip.
Based in Hasami, Kyushu, an area with a history of over 400 years in ceramics, Nishiyama established its first kiln in 1865 and has been passing down its wisdom for generations.
Specialising in contemporary works using traditional techniques, it produces diverse styles of ceramics and has collaborated with various well-known designers. Yet there’s still a family feel to Nishiyama’s show space and shop. Housed inside an old warehouse that was once used to produce porcelain, and filled with copious designs — from minimalist to Nordic-style patterns — it’s a wonder to visit.
