This elegant Arita porcelain teapot has been a display piece in a home for many years. A large teapot for Japan, it was designed to serve parties of guests, but was rarely, if ever, used.
Made by the Aizan kiln, its bold blue underglaze pattern is hand painted. We think its timeless, its swirling vines adding elegance to the strikingly bold two-tone flowers.
Every petal of the chrysanthemum motifs has the subtlest of gradation, and the freehand feel of way the design grows around the teapot adds to its artisanal charm. In perfect condition, only the handle gives away its age, its twisted twine darkened by time.
It is absolutely one of our favourite pieces of the NiMi Objects collection.
